Controls

Hi all
You may have read my profile and you see how much I've changed from a VP MB10 to the BM 722. I've change everything and thought that I could get away with at least with the controls from the old motor set up. Put the boat in the water yesterday here in Sweden and could get any gas when I put it in reverse! So it looks like I have to chnage the "b"controls as well. What is the best method to use and control with two levers one gas and the other gear change. Or one that changes gear and handles the gas in one movement?
What can you recommend. Type and method would be great. Other wise at this stage it seems to work well but without reverse I not going anywhere.

Hi,

Congratulations on your new engine. I would recommend a single lever control and Beta Marine can supply one that is made by Morse Teleflex. I have had a lot of good luck with this particular control and have installed hundreds over the years. When it is correctly adjusted the action is smooth and very easy to use. I have attached a photo of this particular control.

If your local Beta Marine dealer doesn't have one in stock, I am sure that he can get one from the Beta factory in a hurry for you.

best wishes, Stanley

Thanks Stanley
I'll get on to them on Monday, That looks easy to handle as if I'm overboard I want them to be able to pick me up again.
Keep the site going its great
I'll let you know the result as changing a motor takes time and a bit of persistance other wise interesting and you then know your boat.
regards Bryan

Hi Stanely
Had the same problem with the new controls.
Forward OK with gas, reverse no gas. After temporarily setting up the control in another position I was able to trim in both forward and reverse but its not really smooth. Is there a catch to setting up where the controls should sit in relation to the length of the cables and how they should bend in towards the motor?
My cables are ratherstraight not over long. I understand nothing to do with the motor but you may have a few tips to get abetter result. before I cut a hole in the cockpit side and find out it was in the wrong place. Today I have them mounted in a side hatchbin where it was with the old motor.
regards Bryan

Are you sure that the shift lever on the transmission is not jamming on the side of the engine bed or the hull?

Hi Stanely

Good try Stanely I'd also thought about that as the shift lever in reverse sits very close to the hull motor bed but its travel is OK. I've temporarily set up the controls a little forward that is closer to the motor than I had it and have been able to adjust it in. It could be that if the control wires are at their maximum length perhaps makes it difficult to get enough travel to allow the mechanism to start pull the gas wire. I was able to take the boat from my winter harbour to my jetty and the motor work perfectly and at approx 3000 revs did 5 knots with ease against the wind. Very pleased at this point. The boat is a deep keel yacht Tripp 29 footer displacement aprrox 4 tons.

Thanks for your effort.
Regards Bryan

Hello Bryan,

This now sounds like your cables do not have enough slack in them. They need the slack as if they are tight, the adjustment will go out. Remember that the engine moves a little on its mounts and this can have the effect of speeding up the engine when you go into gear.

When you set the control up, it is important that the brass end fittings fit in the holes on the throttle and gearshift levers at the rear of the control without any tension on them. This will be in the idle position for the throttle and neutral position for the gear shift.

Please let me know how you get on.
Regards,
Stanley

Hi Stanley
Well I finally got the controls setup after moving the control unit back and forth untill I had it working both forward and reverse. I looked at your suggestion that I might have the gear arm catching on the motor bed side which would not have improve my condition. Taking your advice I thought it was a bit close and filed out a bit of the mounting to give full travel into reverse. Then an interesting thing happened that you should look into. I was using the hole on the gear arm closest to the gear shaft. There are two and I was trying limit the amount of travel. When the cable pulled the arm into reverse all the way the speed conector on the en of the cable (Beta supplied) gets stuck behind a mounting nut on the gearbox. This is a design problem as there is only one way to mount the cable holder although I have seen a modification by some else who change to Beta - but there are two holes. I have moved now to the outer hole as that does not catch but hind the nut on the gearbox. Is there any where in the Beta mounting description that addresses this point. Perhaps there should be.

So 25 degrees and sunny today and tomorrow here in Stockholm ( oh and 20 000 islands to sail around) so sailing we go.
regards Bryan

Have fun Bryan, I am glad that you got your control sorted out.

As a point of interest, the gear lever has 2 fixing holes for different applications. The inner one is not for use with the vertical cable entry and can only be used with a horizontal cable bracket.

Regards,
Stanley
