Hi, I am currently specifying for our canal boat build starting in about 10 months time and am researching a number of options and seek suggestions / input from those more experienced than myself.
The Beta 43 seems appropriate for the proposed 62 foot (approx 20 ton) narrowboat, and I am wanting to include efficient silencers / effective engine noise reduction practices.
I have read about "hospital silencers" and wonder what these are, whether they provide any significant extra noise reduction and if they have any downsides, e.g. on fuel economy ?
I also wonder if better engine mounts can be fitted from those supplied as standard to reduce vibrations finding their way to the hull and if anyone has incorporated sound deadening materials in the engine compartment.
Beta Marine take noise reduction seriously.We even offer our Beta 43 propulsion engine in an acoustic housing Super Silence - as a standard option.
Sound deadening materials can be used in the engine compartment but please allow adequate ventilation as you will have about 10kW to remove with the Beta 43.
A Hospital silencer is a general description for high attenuation silencers. They are very effective in reducing the exhaust noise level,but are a lot larger than the standard.
Our standard silencer measures 68 cms long by 12 cms diameter;our Hospital silencer measures 87 cms long by 30 cms diameter. The main downside is the actual physical size and this is an important aspect with narrow boats; and the of course the extra cost. Fuel consumption is unchanged by correctly sized silencers.
Our standard flexible mountings are high quality, some of the best available.From our testing we did not find superior flexible mountings.
