Do I need to worry about a battery charger and alternator attempting to charge my batteries at the same time? This is on a 1505 with optional 100 amp alternator. I have checked with the battery charger manufacturer and they say it is not a problem....I don't think it will be a problem for the Beta 100 amp alternator but wanted to check.
Also - what is the recommended wire size for the battery to starter wire...?
One last thing - do I need to use the field connections on my battery selector switch to prevent damage to the alternator when switching between batteries when the engine is running?
Your alternator and battery charger should not interfere with each other at all. If you have any worries, I suggest that you switch off the charger before you start the engine.
Your battery switch should hold the connection open when switching from battery 1 to both and then to battery 2. A simple check with an ohm meter will confirm this and then there will be no problem switching from 1 to 2. however you must not switch off the switch while the engine is running or you will damage the alternator.
The battery cable sizing depends largely on the length of the cables. Longer cables will need to be heavier to counter voltage loss. Let me know the proposed length of the cables from the engine to the switch and to the battery, plus the size of battery that you are going to use and I can then provide a recommendation.
The total length of wire from the battery to the switch and then to the starter is 10 foot.
Is there a way to protect the alternator from damage if the switch is switched off while the engine is running? I thought that the field connections on the switch would do this.....?
I will repeat what I wrote in my earlier reply to you;
you must not switch off the switch while the engine is running or you will damage the alternator.
If this is a problem for you I suggest that you discard the switch and wire the boat with our split charge system with a simple on / off switch for the house bank. This way your engine battery will always be connected and you wont have to worry.

Our 100 amp alternator is made by Iskra. The model # is AAK5395. These have proven extremely reliable in service. Here is a link to their site http://www.iskra-ae.com/eng/index.php
