Hello, I,ll direct this question towards Stanley but anyone who has any info would also be great. My wife and I have a 36' Morgan that's 36 years old and between us and the previous owner it's been almost completely rebuilt. One last thing to do...replace the oil and diesel leaking 36 year old Westerbeke. The current engine as it is does not give us very much confidence in it's reliability and we've decided we'd like to re-power with a Beta Marine. Neither of us has very much experience working on/with diesel engines so feel free to dumb down your responses. We've looked at the options for re-powering and given the great reviews, the ease of getting parts, and maintence friendliness of the Beta Marine; has helped us at least pick the right engine for us (haven't ordered yet). Our current Westerbeke is mounted in reverse to the transmission and then to a V-drive running the shaft back out through the hull. With the Beta Marine will we need a new transmission? We would like to rid ourselves of the V-drive and I haven't found anything regarding transmissions with the Beta Marines yet (although I haven't looked real hard either). Thanks all in advance!
Jon
Without knowing which Morgan 36 you are repowering I cannot get too specific- but I can answer some of your questions.
If you currently have a v-drive it will be best to retain the v-drive configuration. This will greatly simplify the installation of the new engine.
If you have a velvet drive transmission that is in good working order, we would advise you to purchase a Beta Marine engine with the Velvet Drive adaptor kit and reuse your current transmission with the new Beta engine. This would be more economical then purchasing a new transmission.
The Borg Warner Velvet Drive is a very robust marine transmission that will give years of dependable service and can be freshened up by a competent transmission shop at a reasonable cost.
If you have a Hurth HBW 150V or ZF15MIV mechanical v-drive we would recommend that a new ZF 15MIV transmission be purchased with your new engine.
The new mechanical v-drive would give you the best reliability and allow you to retain your current engine configuration.
Please call us at the main office (252 249-2473) and we will be happy to discuss what Beta Marine engine package would be the best fit for your particular vessel.
Thanks again for the post. We look forward to speaking with you.
Best regards,
Farron Peffer
