Packing new stuffing box

Dear Friends:

I have re-powered my Stone Horse with a Beta 14. New 3/4" shaft using Buck Algonquin spud type stuffing box. Specified packing for the size and arrangement is 3/8". I've decided to try Gore GFO packing this time.

Only two rings of packing comfortably fit inside spud (gland). Most recommendations advise three. But there really isn't space enough.

What do folks think? Are two rings sufficient, inasmuch as the space for packing material is essentially filled using two?

I appreciate all thoughts here.

Thank you.

Hello Robert,

We have seen mixed results from the "synthetic" packing and prefer the tried and true wax impregnated flax with the tell tale drip of seawater.

Your box was designed for this style of packing and the synthetic stuff may not fill it quite the same.

The results are the most important thing and many people swear by the synthetic packing.

If the packing is keeping out the water and not causing the shaft or stuffing box to over heat I would claim success.

Best regards,

Farron
