I have recently purchased a 1977 Catalina 27 that I have removed the Atomic 4 engine.
I am looking at either the Beta Marine 13.5 or the 16hp engine. I will be sailing out of San Carlos, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez. I plan on crossing over from the mainland side to the Baja coast and want an engine that can handle all conditions for a 15 to 20 hour crossing.
I like the excellent low fuel consumption of the 13.5 hp but wonder if the 16hp would be a better choice for the open water.
Congratulations on your new boat. I would recommend the Beta 14 (13.5HP) with 2:1 transmission for the Catalina 27. The 16 will only cost you more money but wont make the boat any faster or better performing. The money saved can be spent on the correct propeller so that you get the best drive possible from your new engine. Either of these engines will do what you want if properly installed. With the Beta 14 expect fuel consumption in the region of one gallon of diesel every 4 or 5 hours.
My prop program comes up with a 12"x8" three blade RH propeller with 50% blade area ratio (like the Michigan Wheel MP3 or DJ355).
Thanks for your prompt reply. I have heard nothing but good reviews from Beta Marine and look forward to working with you in the future. I will be buying the engine in the next few months. I have a lot of work to do before I am ready to install the engine. Removal of the gas tank and converting to diesel and general cleaning up the interior of the engine compartment before the install. Since this is a total restore of this old boat I am planning on spending a year before it hits the water again. By then I hope to be retired and sailing again.
It is refreshing (and might I say rare) that you find a company with the customer service that Beta Marine has.
