REPOWER CORBIN 39 VOLVO PENTA MD17D V DRIVE

Hi

I have purchased the vessel listed below and wish to have her repowered. She had a Volvo panta md17d 36hp motor with a Vdrive  serial number MS2V84068237. Could you give me some guidance on suitable Beta Marine engines and V Drives for replacement. I will also be considering Hydraulic drive options if good direct drive fit not found.

Thank you in advance

Dennis

Hello Dennis,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new purchase!

The Corbin 39 repower has been done previously with the Beta 43 and the results were excellent. The Beta 43 is available with the ZF 15MIV V-drive.

The Beta 43 with the ZF 15MIV in a 2.13:1 ratio will give you a speed of 7.5 kts while saving you about 100 lbs in weight over the Volvo. This Beta 4 cylinder engine will also be much smoother and quieter.

I have attached 2 photos showing the Beta 43 installed in the Corbin 39.  Your interior may be slightly different than is shown.

While the Volvo MS2V uses a 20 degree angle drive, the 15MIV has a 15 degree angle drive. The difference in drive angle can easily be allowed for by bolting aluminum angle to the existing engine beds.

I have attached a photo of a Pearson 323 showing how this technique was used to convert from the Volvo MS2V to a Beta engine using the 15MIV.

The plywood alignment jig makes positioning of the new bed angle spot on.

The standard v-drive package will be much easier to install and maintain then a hydraulic system.

Best regards,

Farron

Thank you for the prompt response

I will take some time to consider option of installing Beta 43 with the ZF 15MIV in a 2.13:1 ratio. Can you tell me if your response represents Beta Marine. I consider this forum as a great way for Beta Marine to built a question and answer data base for prospective customers.

Thank you again for clear concise response

Dennis

Hi

I have started refit of vessel mentioned above and have come to understand her mechanical engine transmission connection. When vessel came into my possession the engine was removed. After investigation and removal of transmission it has come to be my opinion that the engine was bobtail and connected to stand alone transmission thru shaft u-joint and swivel baring block. I have decided to investigate using Beta 43 or 38 SD. Can you give me price differential between Beta 43 with the ZF15miv in a 2.13:1 ratio and option three complete engine saildrive. I have asked the question in this manner beleaving you may not want to disclose price.

Regards
Dennis

After researching sail drive and hydraulic options. I have reverted back to shaft drive thru remotely mounted MS2V-Drive this is the original configuration as listed above. I was able to find a used MS2V transmission to use as a spare.

 $T2eC16F,!yME9s5qE+fgBQcGJp0qD!~~48_20.JPG

We now have 2.37 trans ratio and 18/14 prop from my calculations this should give vessel hull speed of 7.58n at 2800 RPM.

Questions

: Beta 38 is this engine rated at 3000 or 3600 rpm web sites have conflicting information?

: At 3000 rpm what HP and Torque can the Beta 38 produce?

: Do the Beta 38 , 43 have SAE 5 bellhouses?

: Do you now of sae 5 bellhouse adaptore with ms2 bolt pattern I would like to use same pattern as stand alone ms2v tranny?

: What damper plate is supplied or recommended for bobtail engine?

: Are these engines considered the Kubota Super Series 3,5?

: Would you consider Beta 38 correct match torque and hp for this vessel with 2.37 trans ratio and 18/14 prop (Dia/pitch) displacement 24000lb?

I will be purchasing engine this winter for installation in 2014 any suggestions is welcome particularly on flywheel couplings damper plate.

Regards

Dennis

Hello Dennis,

You are correct, our engines are the Kubota super 5 and super 3 series engines.

As far as your current project is concerned, what will work is the Beta 38 with the adaptor kit for the Volvo 120S saildrive. This will allow you to connect your transmission to the engine.

You cannot use the Beta 43 as the transmission wont be able to handle the torque from this engine.

Thank you Stanley

The transmission was not and will not be connected to the engine please note the picture of two mounts one for engine and one for tranny.

It may be important for me to know bellhouse and flywheel size as there are options as to how flywheel damperplate, adaptore, shaft ujoints and tranny are connected. Prop shaft side of tranny is standard setup.

What may be needed is a adaptore and suported stub shaft.

The attachment should give you what you want. I cant attach a pdf file on the forum so if this photo is not clear enough, please email me direct and I'll email the pdf to you.

You will need a damper plate to protect the transmission. The damper will depend on what shaft you use.
