I am getting a high oil pressure reading. Starts between 60 and 75. Increases to 100 as I increase the rpms. The only thing I have done recently that would effect the engine is I had my prop repitched. After the repitch I took the boat out and checked how she ran. Was great! I didn't notice the oil pressure while I was out. Back in the slip after a bit I started the motor up and noticed the high pressure. Oil level is low, but still well above the add mark. Where should I look for a problem?
I suspect that you have a gauge or sender issue. Varify the oil pressure with mechanical test gauge . The prop pitch has nothing to do with the oil pressure reading. What oil are you using?
Thanks for your quick response! I bought the boat in November of last year and changed the oil in January. I used 15W40. Don't remember the brand name. I want to say Rotella(?) but not sure. I did have a wire come loose from the sending unit last month, which was reconnected once I got to a marina. Oil pressure was fine after that.
O.K. Replaced the oil sending unit. Still showing high oil pressure. Finally found somebody with a mechanical guage. Oil pressure is showing around 30psi I believe he said. Goes up to 60psi with higher rpms then the relief valve opens up. The mechanic said it is either a wire problem or a bad guage. He explained how to check the wire, but after opening up the back of the guage, I couldn't figure out which wire was which so I replaced the guage. Still shows high pressure. So evidently it is a wiring problem. Looking at the way the wiring is at the back of the guage, with multi-pin connectors, am I going to be able to replace the oil pressure wiring by itself? or am I going to have to replace all or part of the engine wiring harness?
The test with the mechanical gauge proves that engine oil pressure is correct.
The wire that goes from the oil pressure sender to the gauge is a thin white wire with a brown tracer. This connects at pin # 8 in the multi-pin plug at the back of the engine and the back of the panel. There are 2 different wiring diagrams in your owners manual, one on the engine wiring and one on the panel. Check at both multi-pin plugs, peel the rubber boots back and check for corrosion. If you see any at the front or the back of each half of the plug, you have possible found the problem.
