Beta 30 - no rpm over 3000 in gear

Hey Stanley, we installed a beta 30 in our Oday 37 in 11/2011 and have loved it!  We originally could do 3600rpm and 7.2 knots but on commissioning this spring I've noticed that we cannot get the rpm over 3000 while underway.  In the slip and untethered neutral will go to 3600 but in gear F or R only 3000rpm.  I've checked the air filter and replaced the secondary fuel filter/water separtor and no effect.  The only change from last year was to add a gooseneck to the exchaust - could back pressure be an issue or should I replace the primary (on engine) fuel filter?  There is no black smoke when testing at 3000rpm under load or 3600 in neutral.

Hello Chris,

The goose neck should not normally make a difference. Unless it is very undersized.

I would check the following.

Bottom of the boat or the propeller is fouled.

The throttle lever on the engine is not reaching wide open position and the throttle cable needs adjusting.

Fuel restriction. The on engine fuel filter should be changed at least once a year.

Thanks for the info - the gooseneck is the same 2" exhaust hose as the rest of the system.I do not believe it is the throttle cable as I can get it up to 3600 in neutral.  I will replace the fuel filter next and inspect the prop as soon as the water gets a little warmer.

Thanks!

Update - replaced the fuel filter and no change.  I removed the throttle linkage and manually operated the lever in gear with the same results.  As far as the prop - if it is fouled wouldn't that cause excessive load and therefore some blackish exhaust (unburnt fuel?) - exhaust is completely transparent.

As a side w/ the throttle lever operated manually she rev's to ~3800 in neutral.

These new tier4 diesels are not like the older diesels that you are used to. They are very clean burning and it is unlikely that you will get one to push black smoke out of the exhaust unless you have a bad injector.
