Pearson 422

I am considering repowering a Pearson 422, center ****pit, v drive, displacement 22,000.  The current engine is a Yanmar 4JH-TE, turbo rated at 55 hp coupled to a Walter drive and Velvet transmission (2:1?)

What information do I need to help decide which Beta might be the right size?

Do you have any information on other 422 or 424's that have repowered with a Beta?

Thanks

greg

Hello Greg and welcome to the forum.

A good number of 424 and 422 Pearsons have been repowered with Beta Marine engines. The most common engine is the Beta 50 and this is supplied with the adaptor kit and oil cooler to re-use the velvet Drive transmission. Your Velvet Drive transmission should be direct drive (1:1) and the 2:1 reduction ratio is in the Walter V Drive.

A few people have fitted the Beta 60 but there is no real gain in performance.

There is a series of articles written by Pete Dubler on the work done to his 424 which includes a repower. You can read about it here http://www.betamarinenc.com/index.php/repower-centre/repower-articles

Regards, Stanley

Thank you Stanley. Do you know if the engine mounts/bed for the 4JH-TE match up tot he Beta 50?

I'll read through Pete's site.

Thanks!

The mounts should be very close. According to the Yanmar drawings, the mount centers port to stbd on the 4JH series are 470mm whereas the Beta 50 is on 450 mm.
You will have to drill some different holes in the engine beds to accommodate the different size flex mounts and you will have to fill in some holes that are no longer used.
No one has mentioned any problems when repowering the 422/424 series.

Seems like 10mm on each side should be do-able. I'll take a look at the beds and so some measuring.

thanks!
