Repower Bristol 43.3

I am looking into repowering my 1986 Bristol 43.3. If you can't find information on the 43.3 it is the same as the 41.1 below the waterline but heavier mostly in the stern. The existing engine is a Westerbeke W52 with a HBW 150 transmission. Both have near 6000 hours and were not very well maintained by the last owner. The engine still runs OK but repairs are near continuous on oil, coolant and fuel leaks, etc.

i was looking at the 60 HP engine as a replacement. Looks like the 50 and 60 are the same size and the 60 seems to have a better fuel consumption curve. The dry displacement is listed at just over 26,000# but loaded we are right at 30,000. Currently running an 18x13 3 blade prop and don't think it can go much larger diameter.

How close will this engine come to fitting where the W52 is currently located? The current install has 18.5" centers on the rails.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The Beta 50 has much more torque than the W52. Starting at 1100 RPM you have 100 ft lbs and more all the way up to a max of 2,800 as opposed to about 80 ft lbs between 2,000 and 3,000 for the W52. If you go with the Beta 50 with a 2:1 transmission, you can keep your current propeller. I doubt that you could fit the prop called for by the Beta 60.

As far as fit is concerned, the W52 has the mounts placed higher than is common today and this will require special mount brackets or a modification to the engine beds.
