Heat Exchange & Impeller Service

When servicing the impeller pump and the heat exchanger, I am tempted to rub the o-rings with silicon grease and coat the bolt threads with Anti-Seize (silver color paste). Are these good ideas? Any recommendations for good/safe cleaners for the tube stack? Thank you.

Hello Jane-O,

As a general rule, o-rings should always be installed with grease or oil to lubricate them.

Silicone grease will work great on the water pump o-ring and also the threads for the cover plate screws. Anti-Seize is little to nasty and messy and not required. If you want the best protection, use a product called Tef-Gel (R) .

White vinegar will work best for soaking and cleaning the tube stack. It is cheap, safe, and can be disposed of easily.

Hi Farron,

Thanks for your help. My main concern was the heat exchanger bolts. I was guilty of letting the heat exchanger service go undone for my first two seasons and I think that the previous owner may have let it go for his first couple of seasons with the new motor as well. I was a bit concerned about damaging the bolts when trying to get it apart. There is some corrosion on the bolt threads. Would the Tef Gel be the best thing on those threads? Sorry, but I wasn't sure if your advice was specific to the impeller, or for both areas.

Thank you.

Regards,

Bill

Tef-Gel will work great for both the heat exchanger o-ring and the heat exchanger bolt threads.   We stock it in our NC office.  It is available online.

Hello Farron,

Sorry to be a pest. I have the following 3 questions.

1.) I am looking at the replacement O-rings for my heat exchanger. I have a few O-rings that I bought from a Beta Marine distributor and they are nominally 2.1mm in diameter (I averaged several measurements). The ones that I removed from the heat exchanger seem to match this size. However, I recently received part number 212-07273 O-rings from both the distributor and from you. These O-rings are nominally 2.7mm. It is enough so that you can see the difference, so I am wondering if it matters which I use.

2.) I just received a Beta-brand impeller kit, part number 207-09041 from you.  This kit has 2 O-rings. I didn't do any averaging, but they look different and I measure one to be ~1.6mm and the other ~2.0mm. I only removed the front plate of my impeller housing, so which O-ring is correct?

3.) I received a Johnson pump impeller kit, part number 09-810B-1 from a Beta dealer. The kit has one O-ring, but also a couple of thin gaskets. I didn't notice a gasket when I removed the cover of my impeller housing. Do I need to use the gaskets?

Thank you very much for your help!

Regards,

Bill
