The tachometer / hour meter operates through detection of a sine wave voltage from the alternator windings. Most Beta hour meters record operational time when the engine is running and the alternator has charge output. The exception being that Beta Marine does offer an optional magnetic pickup that reads the rotation of the flywheel teeth. This is independent of the alternator charge output but the effect is the same. The hour meter records anytime the engine is running.
