C&C 38

I am finally going to replace my Atomic 4. I have a 1975 38' C&C sailboat the displace about 15000# not including gear, water, etc. The engine runs great but is just not powerful enough in heavy seas. I would appreciate any information available regarding the beta marine diesel as a replacement engine. I am considering the 28 hp beta engine as it is listed as a good fit to replace the Atomic 4.

Brad,

The Beta Marine BD1005 is the 28 HP diesel you are referring to and would be a good replacement in a C&C 38.  I have most of the information to make the necessary calculations, but I need to have a couple more pieces of information.

1 - Please confirm your boat has a V-Drive transmission configuration

2 - What is the largest propeller size you can use.

With this I can then calculate the best propeller / transmission ration for this configuration.

Finally, for cost information, please contact Beta Marine on (877) 227 2473 as we do not discuss pricing in this forum.

Thanks Bob

The transmission is not a v drive. I believe the largest prop I can use is 16 inch. Right now I have  a 14 inch Campbell Sailor 3 blade.

Thanks

Brad

Here is the infrormation based on your boat and using a Beta Marine BD1005 28HP engine.

LWL: 29' 7"
Displacement: 14,700 lbs (calculated on 15,700 lbs)
Max Prop Diam: 16"

Using a 2:1 transmission the result of the Prop Calc is:-

16x8 3 bladed RH Prop for a calculated speed of 7.2 knots.
