Beta compatability

Building a Bay Pilot 18 by desgner Arc Davis.

Calls for a 30 to 60 hp out board. Like to

use Beta mated to Alpha 1 sterndrive even

even if I have to have parts machined . I

would like this set up because it puts weigth

lower in boat for stability and decreases chance

fire. It is a plaining hull with 1800 lbs displacement

Like to know if this is possible. The designer said

the boat is well suited to this application. Any

  information would be appreciated.

I am not aware of a Beta Marine engine having been mated to a stern drive.  If you were to consider this further, then simplest method would be to not directly mate the engine to the stern drive but couple it using a short jack shaft.  This would eliminate the need for elaborate adapters and complicated machining. This would also allow you to distribute the weight of the engine further forward and allow it to come up on plane quicker.
