V Drive (engine conversion) Cal 34

I've a 1967 Cal 34 with an Automic IV.  I'm wanting to convert to a diesel engine.  Will you tell me if the Beta Diesels & transmissions fit up to my V drive?  The information on my V drive is:  Walter Gear Drive, Part # UJ-209, ratio 2-1, serial # 13468. There are 6 bolts holding V drive to transmission.  My boat displaces 10,000 + lots of cruising gear.  Will you tell me which engine & prop you'd recommend?

Hello,

The V drive used on your Atomic 4 will not fit any of the new engines. You will end up using a ZF15MIV transmission. This is the only small mechanical V drive transmission available today. Thus you will have a lot of work to repower your Cal 34. This boat poses a number of problems with a repower. I am sorry that this is not the answer that you want as the new transmission has a different V angle to the old one.

The Beta Marine BD902 with the ZF15MIV transmission will be a great engine for your boat but there is a lot of work involved.

Regards, Stanley

I have a 1978 Cal 34 III.  Her original engine, westerbeeke/Perkins 25 had rusted away due to repeated failure of the raw water pump.  I had Hersfield in Sausalito replace with a BD1005 (28HP) and a  V-drive transmission.  I am extremely happy with the engine and boat.
