Good Afternoon, I am researching a replacement for my now dead Volvo Penta MD21B 61HP Engine. My 36ft, 10 ton sailboat is currently in the Jacksonville area. Could you please advise as to what model you would reccomend as far as mounting and other conversions as well as other information I should consider. I was thinking 40-50 HP range. Thanks in advance, Jake
You could use either the Beta 38 (BV1505) or the Beta 43 (BV1903) in your boat. Both of these engines are used in boats that are heavier than yours with good results. The whole secret to doing a successful repower is to use the correct propeller/transmission combination to actually get the power that you buy to the water efficiently.
The Volvo MD21 is actually a marinised Peugoet engine and is fairly high reving engine (4500RPM) whereas our engines are much slower turning (3000 RPM and 2800RPM) with lots of low speed torque. They are both much quieter than the MD21 and both are instant starting engines.
Without having any boat information, I really cant go into any more detail. If you let me know the waterline length of the boat, type of hull form and the size of the propeller that you currently have, I will be able to work out a prop calculation for you and help with some more information.
