Hello All, having recently bought a Pearson Triton to refit,I have the same problems everyone has with a 40 plus year old Atomic 4(it still runs but needs much work)as far as it needing to come out of the boat. And if I am going to refit the boat for my wife and myself to enjoy then why not repower with a diesel.I guess I am like everyone else money is and issue but so is dependabilty,an safety and knowing I will get home. After sitting down and looking at my boat budget I am going to repower and hold off on some other items right now but want to install the motor myself and don't know which Beta to use for this repower or where to buy at the cheapest price.Having grown up with my parents owning a marine engine repair business(I still own the marina but have nothing to do with it other than pouring money in it as it's a black hole) I am not totally lost but want to do the best I can price wise, and want good guildeness about install.Any suggestions from anyone.I am on the lower western side of the Chesapeake Bay. baysailer
The Beta 16 with 2:1 transmission is the ideal engine for the Triton. You will need to upgrade to a 3 blade propeller (12"x9"x three blade 50%BAR). I dont discuss pricing on this forum so please contact us at the office for pricing. You can also contact any of our dealers.
This is actually a fairly easy repower. The hardest part of the job is getting the old stuff out and then preparing the engine compartment for the new engine. If your boat still has the original copper exhaust system with a standpipe, get rid of it. You will find that a modern waterlift muffler system with flexible wire reinforced hose is easy to fit and it is not as expensive as some folks like to make out. Once you have done this, the rest is comparitively easy.
We can help with advice and parts procurement during your repower. Regards, Stanley
Stanley, I will be giving you a call, and my boat is completely as from the factory.I think she was a slip queen as everything on her is factory(even tube type vhf radio),but my project will be to bring her up todays standards as she has a very solid hull and deck with zero soft spots and all her factory equipment is still intact and working. If you could give me a direct number I will be calling you asap as she's headed for a haul out the first of next week and motor to be removed as soon as she is on the stands.I am trying to have her back in the water by the end of August for some fall sailing.Thanks- baysailer
