Alternator Controller

I have recently installed a Beta 50 engine , with a 4 blade Vari Prop ,in my 36 ft Ebbtide yacht. It is great!!!

I have a 100 Amp alternator, but with the standard, in built regulator. This is not very efficient. I therefore wish to upgrade , either to the Beta Controller,(P/N 200-02580), or to another multi step regulator such as the ARS 5.

My questions are as follows:

1) I assume that I have to remove the regulator,(P/N 200-01771) and then fit the brush box,(P/N 200-02668), and the sub loom,(P/N 200-02737), as well as the Beta controller.

Do I also need the split charge relay, timer relay, start relay, isolation block, 28 A relay and 15 A fuse?

2) Can you advise, and quote on the items that I need.

An ARS 5 regulator retails for about $ 300.00, how does this compare with a Beta Controller.

           Thanks,

                       Bill Robinson

Hello Bill,

I have a few questions for you.

1) do you have a blower to duct the heat away from your alternator?

2) what kind of batteries do you have and what capacity?

When one replaces the internal regulator it is easiest if you fit the brush box. We have these in stock. I would prefer the Balmar 614 instead of the ARS 5. You dont need a split charge system and the old style of split charge system has largly been replaced with voltage sensitive relays. BEP make good ones and these are simple to install and wire in. Your cost should be about $70 to $75. We have them as do most other suppliers.

Another alternative is to fit an Adverc controller and we keep these in stock. Read about it here  http://www.adverc.co.uk/product/14

We only supply the Beta controller when supplied with an engine.

Regards, Stanley

Hi Stanley,
Thanks for your prompt, honest reply. Here are my replies:

1) I do not have a blower to remove heat from the alternator, is this really necessary?

2) I have four 225Amp hr, 6 Volt "golf cart", lead acid batteries. They are used as a single bank, so I am glad to hear that I do not need the split charge system.

In addition to the 100Amp alternator supplied on my Beta 50, I have a 100 Amp Balmar alternator as a spare. Idealy, I would like to have one regulator that I could use for either alternator.

I am back in South East Asia (Thailand/Malaysia), would it be possible for me to order everything I need from you, as opposed to multiple suppliers? The saving on shiping costs could be significant.

I also have another unrelated question, do you have a fuel consumption graph for the Beta 50?
I normally run at 1700 to 1900 rpm and would like to know the fuel consumption.
Regards,
Bill.

Hello Bill,

Taking the heat away from the alternator will increase its output. As an alternator produces power it gets hot. If it gets too hot it automatically reduces its output as a safety measure to stop it self destructing. In the tropics this is more dramatic than in cold climates.

As the 2 alternators are so different, you will have to change some wiring to get the same regulator to work. It is possible  and if you let me know which Balmar you have, I'll come up with a plan.

Allow for 3 to 3.5 quarts of diesel at 1800 to 1900 RPM. You will get the complete performance graph for the 50 here http://www.betamarinenc.com/images/50%20perf%20graphs%2009.jpg

We will gladly get other parts for you and ship them on. Please email me directly and I'll get back to you with pricing etc. stan@betamarinenc.com

Regards, Stanley
