I am considering a new engine for my Bomay Clipper LOA 31' LWL 25'9" displacement 10,900Lbs it currently has a Volvo MD11C and I am wondering what the recomended Beta replacement engine would be.
The Beta 20 will provide more than sufficient power. You could upgrade to the Beta 25 if you want more power. Ultimately the governing factor is the size of prop that you can accomodate as getting the power that you are buying to the water as efficiently as possible is important. We can provide these engines on the same mount centers (port to stbd) as the MD11C to make your project as easy as possible.
Currently the prop diameter is 15 3/4" with 3" btween the tip of the prop and the hull it is two blade and forward is CCW viewed from rear I am not sure of the pitch.
The best motoring performance will be using the Beta 25 with 2.6:1 transmission. The prop called for is 16"x12" three blade right hand (50% BAR). This will give you the power to push through rough water and adverse winds harder than you really want to.
If you want to stay with a 2 blade propeller, I suggest that you get the 2:1 transmission ratio and use a 16"x10" prop.
This engine is smaller than the MD11C and about half the weight yet is has more power.
