water lift muffler sizing.

Hi Stanley,

I have the beta20, with the water lift muffler that is too small as noted by yourself and Beta uk - in relation to the trouble I had with the high pressure fuel pump....The boat is a Catalina30 with the new 2" exhaust routed up into the kitchen cabinet, behind the sink and out along the port wall behind stove etc...into port locker (where there is a 1 way centek clapper) ...then a  high hump and down and out....(the similar routing to the original hose) ...

Can you recomend a model # of the larger Centek water lift muffler that you would use for this application ...(Farron recommended one but I have misplaced the email)..

I will be rectifying this in the coming months (DEc or Jan) ....and in the meantime the engine has been properly winterized with the pink antifreeze via the intake ..and the engine itself is filled with oil to keep the pump in a permanent oil bath until next use.....

Thankyou again for all your help and advice to date, it has been appreciated...

Hello Alteredcourse,

I would suggest the Catalina muffler as a good choice.

Catalina can provide this with 2" fittings.

Best regards,

Farron

< i am more curious about the centek model you once suggested, (sent me a picture)...my engine supplier has acknowledged I need a larger water lift, and has agreed to send one at his cost,  I am not sure he would send out a Catalina one (350usd) ...but would most probably do the centek model ... I believe the final 2 numbers were 27 in the model that I require,,,Can you please advise....

Well, it took some time, but I have installed the Centek 1500027, ...with the beta20 in a Catalina 30...after runnning the engine for an hour, unconnected at the (westerbeke) hi-rise exhaust elbow, and the outlet hose ontop of the water lift.....

then on the dock, I simulated "heeling" by tilting the waterlft exhaust with the attached hoses (on the inlet side that connect to the hirise elbow) ....it was over 35+ degrees, before any water poured out ...(which would be the water that can harm the engine....I retested this a few times after reconnecting and runnning the engine and then disconnecting.....I learned that if I shook the outlet hose approx 1.6extra litres of water flow into the water lift....then with the same test on the dock, pouring into a bucket, the water starts to enter the hirrise exhaust elbow at approx 25 degrees.....

Of course this test doesnt allow for the height difference between the outlet on the back of the engine and the inlet on the water lift.....its only a couple inches....on a Catalina 30

Is there a variation of this test that I can do ....or is this amount of 'backflow' acceptable....?  The last thing I want is water in the engine....  I could modify the install by getting a 45 elbow and reconnecting the set up with the waterlift inlet pointing directly aft....this would allow for a full range of heel without any backflow....

Any input appreciated...Jamie

Hello Jamie,

We have had a tremendous number of Catalina 30's successfully use the the Centek 1500027 muffler in conjunction with a high rise exhaust elbow.

The best thing we can suggest is that you photograph the completed exhaust installation and e-mail the photos to us for evaluation.

Provide numerous views and fewer close-ups. Due to file size please e-mail them directly to me a farron@betamarinenc.com.

I look forward to seeing your installation.

Hi Farron,

I just emailed a few pictures (separate emials)  from my blackberry.

It looks very similar to all the other install pics I have seen;  all I did differently was after running the engine, unconnected the exhaust at the hi rise, and the outlet,   - removed the water lift and hoses as attached,  put a "heeling angle device" on the side of unit, and with the blue silicone hose pointing forward (as it was installed on the boat) started tilting the configuration over, at around 23-25degrees some water starts out, at 30 degress a good amount is coming out,....

I wonder if this is OK, this test is slightly rudimentary;  but to alleviate, I was considering one other 45 elbow (and flexible hose) to allow the water lift inlet to point more in a directly aft position - this would solve all the issues -- I think 2 gentle 45's  are (better than a 90??) as far as back pressure issues go ?? ...  Do you think that is necessary or is my set up as shown more than adequate ?

Thx

Jamie

Well the final exhaust install is done...I emailed some pics separately via my phone....

BETA 20, in a Catalina 30 with centek 1500027 ... a westerbeke hirise elbow, then a blue silicone elbow, into a 45degree fitting,,,,a small length of flexible exhaust hose, into a 45deg fitting, then onto the water lift inlet....by having 2 45 fittings positioned this way there are no "hard turns"  and more importantly it allows the inlet of the 150027 to point as far aft as possible....thereby reducing backflow of water on a heel to starboard....(with 1 45elbow as previously installed water backflowed at aroun 22-25degrees ....  with 2 elbows as the new pics show the water backflows in 40+degrees heel.... the heel test was done by removing the system to the dock and simulating a heeling boat by turning the water lift and hoses to the starboard...(with an "anglometer" ) ..attached to get the degree# ) ....

I think this is great ...just wondering if you see any negative or problem...the only one being more "clamps" and areas for CO to come in if there were a leak ...(all the connections in the middle are clamped and also have some 4200 at the connections too) ....

thx Jamie

Thankyou ...now one more quick question...

1. have a racor500 model primary fuel filter...wondering I have a 2, 10, and 30 micron filters for this ..and wondering what is recommended ...and if it is ok to use any of the above....(I was told a 2 may be too fine and could clog ??) ....

2. the secondary filter is the beta provided ones (not sure what micron rating they are) ...manual says change every250hrs.... is that OK, or is it "annually or every 250hrs whichever occurs first?" ....(i was told yearly?)

any advice appreciated...

THx

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

Use the 10 micron filter in the Racor 500. 2 micron is to fine.

Change the engine mounted filter annually or every 250 hours whichever occurs first.
