Sometimes my 20 hp 3cylinder overheats. It has a new heat exchanger (2010). New impellor from your stock same date.
I run 50/50 premixed antifreeze full strength out of the plastic jug. When this is kept topped off, no problems. However, it gets low every once in a while -- don't know how.
Q1: Is it likely or possible the problem is in the thermostat? This has not been replaced.
Q2: What about the raw water strainer? Anything to check there?
Q3: Raditor pressure cap is original equipment from 2006. Could this be the culprit?
If the engine does not overheat when full of coolant- then lose of coolant would be the problem to address.
I would recommend a new pressure cap and that you add a coolant recovery tank to the system.
The addition of the coolant recovery tank will prevent air from entering the cooling system. Air in the cooling system can sometimes create an air lock at the top of the engine and lead to intermittent overheating as you describe. This can be more of an issue if the engine is set into the vessel at a steep angle, placing the thermostat at the highest point.
We keep a stock of both these items.
Please call if we can assist you further.

Thank you Farron. Your hypothesis seems very logical. I am traveling to New Bern again late Thursday, and could possible pick up the parts you mentioned Fri or Monday. Can you please verify the items for a 722 engine? Best, PT
