Sand on flywheel

I have a betamarine 10 engine which I bought used
It would not start so my mechanic  took off the starter and had it reconditioned.
He found that there was sand on the cogs so he cleaned off as much as he could and replaced the starter.
It went mostly ok last year but was intermitent this year and we put some oil in thru a small hole at the top of the flywheel casing.
That seemed to help for a while and then it stopped working
We took it out and found more sand on the bendix and cogs

Is there any way to flush out the casing?

The only way to clean this out is to take the flywheel housing off the engine and clean everything properly.

Thanks Stanley,  do you know if that is a big job?

Would the gearbox have to be removed?

Access is limited in the boat , I  may have to remove the engine I fear

I was hoping that there might be a bung or maybe I could drill a hole at the bottom and bung it after
