Upgrade 1982 Catalina 30 with Universal 11hp

I have a 1982 Catalina 30 with the original Universal 11hp. My wife has no confidence in this engine any longer as we have done quite a bit of work on it and it is okay at best. The real problem is that we are in the San Francisco Bay and are always fighting wind and curent. Do you know which engine (larger hp) will interchange with my Universal?

Hello and welcome to the Forum,

The Beta 16 is a perfect engine for the Catalina 30 and will replace the current 5411 very nicely.

Many people feel that they need more power and install the Beta 20. This engine also works very well.

The Beta 16, fit with a 12 x 9, 3 blade propeller (50% blade area ) will give about 6.5 Knots with a cruise of 5.5 knots.
