Am hoping someone can give us some ideas. We are a charity and have purchased a canal boat and are redoing it up with a team of volunteers. Money is scarce so we are trying to attempt work ourselves. We have someone who knows there way round a car engine but is struggling with the boat engine problems.
The boat completely cut out and would not restart despite the engine turning over. We have replaced the filters, managed to start the engine after bleeding system and injectors the engine then went into high revs. The only way we could cut engine off within 40-50 seconds was to cover the air intake and starve the engine of air. Has anybody any ideas about what can cause this as we have had conflicting advice saying pump then injectors. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
The engine ran away because it was burning oil that was not controlled by the governer and injection pump. The engine run away can be caused by a number of things. All are bad. This is usually caused because the rings or cylinder bores are badly worn and lubricating oil passes from the crankcase via the rings into the combustion chamber. As the engine is hot it will burn this oil and you have already discovered the only way to stop it. The other cause could be completely worn out valve guides and valve stem seals.
I suggest that you dont use this engine as if it happens again, you may not be able to shut it down and then is is possible for it to continue reving until it explodes from too many revs, even with all the fuel supply shut off.
As this is an old and obsolete engine with persumeably a lot of hours on it, it is more than likely time for a complete rebuild. The Beta Marine factory have a program in England where they can supply a new base engine at a reasonable price and you can re-use the marinising parts from the old engine. This may be your most economical option.
Good luck. Stanley

Hi Stanley
Is there a possibility that a damaged injector is over fueling the bores which could cause the run away effect or a damaged pump??
It is very doubtful. For this to happen the injectors need to be worn and the injection needs to be in good condition to provide the fuel and the stop solenoid needs to be stuck in the run position, which is the opposite of what normally happens with a stop solenoid failure.
