Hi-rise exhaust - need to replace

Hi,

I have the BD 1005 engine and have been extremely please with performance and support I have received over the last several years.

My hi-rise exhaust has cracked in two places near the exhaust manifold connection. I assume that this is due to vibration. My attempts to stabilize the exhaust has not been too successful. I have a few questions before I set about repairing this:

1. how high above the intake to the water lift muffler should the top of the exhaust (water jacket) be ?

2. any experience on how to stabilize this to avoid it happening again ?

3. Looking on other boats (with older engines) the exhaust seems to be plain steel threaded pipe rather than welded stainless. This seems to work for these boats and has the advantage of pretty universal availability in case this is a recurring issue. Does changing over from stainless to plain steel pose any issues ?

4. What are the dimensions of the standard and high-rise exhausts available from Beta Marine, I could not find them on the parts list.

Thanks for your help

Mike

Hello Mike,

If the elbow has been raised over standard, it must get some extra support and the best way to do this is to take a strap support from the top of the elbow to a securing point at the front of the engine. This works as it takes the vibration out of the riser.

Do not put a support down to the mount under the elbow. This will exacerbate problem.

I only have the drawings of the elbows in pdf format and cannot publish a pdf on this forum. If you email me direct, I can reply with the drawings.

Please refer to this page of our website for some guidlines concerning exhaust design www.betamarinenc.com/index.php/repower-centre/exhaust-design

Hi Stanley,

Here is the riser after 75 hours on the engine :

Also cracked at the weld between the elbbow and the flange:

Can this be due solely to vibration ?

How long should these parts last and are they considered a maintenance item ?

Thanks

Mike

Hello Mike,

How tall is your elbow?

Hello,

I had the same problem, but had lengthen the riser. Stanley recommended a flexible SS exhaust hose that I had welded in between between the water injection port and heat exchanger. Stanley supplied the parts but you may be able to buy similar SS hose from auto parts store. So far it's been OK for the past year - about 50 hours.

Hi Stanley,

The riser is about 9 inches tall.

Can you expand on the flexible SS exhaust hose that Manny mentnioned?

You also mentioned strapping as a means of attaching the riser to the engine. Is this the regular strapping one buys to suspend plumbing or did you have something special in mind.

Thanks

Mike

Hello Mike,

I have attached a photo of the s/s flexible exhaust section. If this is used, the riser after this section must be secured to the boat structure and this section must be straight. This will allow for even flex in every direction as the engine does move slightly on its flexible mounts.
