Rusting motor mounts - how to stop rust?

Hi,

I have attached a couple pictures of two of our Beta 38 hp diesel engine motor mounts. They are getting rusty and I need to know how to stop this.

  1.  Should we wire brush them and sand where we can and then paint them with say silver Rust-Oleum?
  2. Or should we wire brush them and spray paint them with silver automotive engine paint?
  3. Or should we do something else?

Thank you,

Chip

I would wire brush them and paint with Ospho. When the Ospho has dried then paint them to protect against future rust.

Hi,

Thanks Stanley, I will see if this is (Ospho) a viable here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I think a I talked to a guy who was soaking several feet of anchor chain in Ospho so it may be. Then we will paint.

Thanks,

Chip

Hi Stanley,

OK I think we found some Ospho at Zaragoza Chandlery in Puerto Vallarta, México. We were told it is also used for cleaning rigging. We will get over there next week to purchase some Ospho.

My question is:

Will the Ospho harm the rubber on our motor mounts? If so do you know of a way of protecting the rubber on the motor mounts?

Thanks, Chip

Clean the metal with a wire brush and then use a throw away paint brush to paint the Ospho onto the metal of the mount and you will be fine.

Update

Got the OSPHO  and did some wire brushing and a little sanding. Then applied the OSPHO .

Attached is a picture of the OSPHO  after the recommended 24 hour waiting time before painting.

Then a picture of the motor mount wire brushed again and painted. We did all four as they were needed to some degree or another.

Also did the coupling as it was getting rusty, before we had touched up the red paint.

It looks like you were very careful to keep the Ospho off the rubber. The end result looks great.

Hello all,

I am about to install a Beta 38 and I don't want to have to deal with rusted motor mounts - I'd rather just get stainless hardware and bypass the whole hassle. Can you tell me the specs on the mounts so I can source out a SS replacement?

Thanks,

I have no record of stainless flex mounts that are good.
