I have the B38 with the 100A alternator and ribbed belt. I just had to replace the fresh water pump on my engine, and it made me think about the alternator--I am preparing for a long trip that cannot be sailed effectively (the "Baja Bash"). If the alternator goes, so goes the engine. I could make do without the power, but it also holds up an important belt!
Is it possible to get an alternator (even a junkyard special 35 amp) that would bolt in and accept the ribbed pulley? I think the price of a new 100A alternator will mean I have no spare, but anything that will turn the water pump would do if the bearings failed on the high amp one.
Is there a spec (e.g Delco frame #) that could be used to identify something with the same frame and shaft dimensions? Would the Beta standard alternator bolt on directly?
It is possible but you will need an alternator with exactly the same mounting arrangement and length to have anything that fit without being a major undertaking. Then you may also have to allow for a wiring change to get the substitute to work. If you want to follow this course I suggest that you take your alternator to an alternator repair shop and ask them to provide one that will work. You may find by the time you have finished that the price of the Beta Marine is less than the special replacement.
