38 hp Beta idle at 1000 to start?

Beta_idle.pngHi,

We have the Beta 38 hp Marine engine. It has about 650 hours on it. We would like to adjust the idle to about 900 to 1000 rpm. I thought I read that the idle should be about 1000 rpm, to start the motor at 1000 rmp. We start it at about 800 rpm but it vibrates we think too much so we almost always up the idle to 1000 rpms.

Any way what should the idle be set at?

Also where is the idle adjustment screw? I want to makes sure it is correct.

Thanks,

Chip

Your red arrow does point to the low idle set point. The V1505 should idle smoothly at about 900 to 940 RPM.
It is a simple matter to adjust and it is advisable to warm the engine up first;
1) remove the ball joint from the throttle arm
2) loosen the locknut (10mm wrench)
3) carefully screw in the adjusting stud. This may only need 1/4 of a turn to achieve what you want
4) tighten the locknut and refit the cable ball joint. Don't forget to use a little grease on the ball joint to stop it rusting and jamming up.
Sometimes, if you have a large propeller, you may have to increase the RPM slightly as it will idle smoothly in neutral but will shake a bit in gear at idle.

Hi,
We have noticed that our idle is at about 750-800 rpm cold. We move it to 900-940 so it does not vibrate.
When the engine is worm the Beta 38 hp runs at 900 rpm at idle without us raising the idle at all. So it runs naturally at 900 rpm when it is worm.
So if we raise the idle up (adjusting the arm on the engine) for when it is running cold at start up world this not have a negative effect on the idle when the engine is wormed up. This may cause it to jump into gear?

Should we change the idle at all?
Thanks,
Chip

If the engine idles properly when warm, what is the issue?
Just increase the idle speed at the helm control while it is cold. This is normal.
