Installed Beta 38 in 1999 Hunter 380

No question here, just letting everyone know that my installation in a 1999 Hunter 380 went as planned and the new Beta 38 is awesome. Quiet and smooth!!! Way better then the Yanmar 3JH2E that was in there. The Beta is a few inches longer, but much narrower and fits in the engine housing nicely with more room to play.  Took me about 8 hours a day for 4.5 days.

Installaion was easy. Did have to use a 4" cutting wheel to take off 1 1/4" of the shaft to accomodate the flexible coupler to maintain my max allowed clearance at the prop hub and strut. Farron was extremely quick answering any questions I had. Repitching my MaxProp tomorrow to allow max RPM with the supplied 2:45 gear.

The engine control "C" planel was too tall to fit in the helm station area. We trimmed the top of the plastic panel with a multi tool and disc type cutter. Cut a straight as possible line and then used 80 grit sander to smooth out the cut and even it up. You'd never notice. Came out real nice and fits in Hunter 380 helm station.

Hardest part of project was fitting my body and bad back into little spaces. Shaft alignment and couplers are the most demanding part of project. Split coupling makes it easier.

Pics don't show final product yet. I did lots of chafe protection and zip tied away wires and hoses even better. More pics to come.

Welcome to the forum Dan.

I look forward to seeing some more of your installation and know that you will have many years of pleasure from your new baby. I do have one question though. What is the drop from the exhaust elbow to the waterlock muffler?

Installed aluminum diamond plate over cruddy looking wood above motor.

Can't seem to get my pics to show up correctly oriented.

Stanley,

Nice talking to you today. Thanks for pointing out the potential problem with the height of my exhaust riser. I'm looking forward to receiving and installing the high rise exhaust tomorrow (Hopefully it fits!) without having it cut and rewelded. Its pretty awesome of you to notice just by my pics. I'm calling it now..... World Class!

Be sure that your exhaust riser is high enough. My Beta 38 came with the "high rise" exhaust but my engine sits so low in the boat that it wasn't high enough. I had to get mine custom modified. Too tall is better than too short.

Here's the pic of the helm station "C" Panel that we had to cut down to fit. Again, used a Harbor Freight Multi Tool vibrating cutter with the half circle cutter for wood and plastic. Finished the edge with a mouse sander with 80 grit paper. Needed to remove about 1/2" of material.

Also, hauled the boat today to change the pitch on my MaxProp. The Beta has a 2:45 gear as opposed to my old Yanmar's 2:83 gear. Changed the pitch on my 16" MaxProp from 24 degrees to 20 degrees as per the recommendations from PYI. Sea trial proved to be spot on! We can achieve max rpm and the prop seems to perform better. I've had the MaxProp for a few years now and will never go back to a fixed blade prop. Tons of power in forward and reverse and a little better sailing performance, especially in light air. Picked mine up used on Ebay a few year back or nearly 1/2 the price of new. They are rock solid.

Highrise exhaust elbow arrived. Didn't fit initially. The elbow extended too far aft. Took to my local welder and had him cut away 1 1/4' from the middle of the bend making a tighter curve at the top instead of so much horizontal pipe before it turned down. He only charged me $30. Can't beat that. Rewrapped with heat insulation and installed. Fits perfect now. IMG_7441.JPG

Noticed a little oil in the bilge of the motor after running yesterday. It was almost under the back of the flywheel housing. I do see that the hose from the sump pump is wet with oil and looks to be the fitting at the pump end. I loosened it, cleaned, and reinstalled but looks to still be leaking. When we were sailing, we were on both port and starboard tacks healing at least 10 degrees. I'll assume the oil found its way both to the bilge floor and possibly aft a little. Any suggestions? Could the inside of the fitting have a knick in it? You supplied me with an extra long hose, which I  haven't used as the pump fits on the bracket at the back of the motor that you supplied.

Hello Dan,

It appears that the flare joint where the hose connects to the pump valve is leaking. I advise that you tighten about 1/4 turn on the 22 mm flare nut. You will have to hold the valve body with another wrench.

I pretty much did that when I took that fitting apart, looked for debris, and reassembled. I'm gonna try going a little tighter or look for a flare repair gasket. I remeber using one on a hydraulic ram from a jet boat we had. It fixes imperfections in a flare joint. If not, I'll drain oil and put on new, longer hose that was shipped with motor.  Thanks for the response.

Dan
