Why a "STOP" button and not the key.....

Getting close to installing my Beta 25...have gone thru the manual several times to insure I don't miss any important items.....can you please explain why you must use the STOP button in lieu of just turning off the key....manual just says something about the alternator...can you elaborate...thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

These diesel engines do not need electricity to run. They only need electricity to start and once running will continue to run as long as the engine gets a supply of clean fuel and air.
Thus, when you want to stop the engine you stop the fuel supply. When you press the stop button, this activates the stop solenoid and as this interrupts the fuel supply, the engine will stop running. Only after this has happened do you switch off the ignition key.

So then what happens if a well-meaning but uninformed passenger turns the key to off while the engine is running?

According to what I read on a earlier thread....the alternator will quit producing electricity......but the motor keeps running....in this case stop the engine before turning the key back on.....

Will that cause any damage to the alternator or reset anything in terms of future charging?

All I saw was it may cause a surge to the alternator which could damage it...Stanley needs to weigh in on this....

There is no guarantee but yes, this can cause damage to the alternator.
Generally if the ignition has been switched off you will be safe if you stop the engine.
Then wait about 15 to 30 seconds before starting the engine and you should be ok.
If you however, switch on the ignition after switching it off by mistake without first stopping the engine, then the surge of built up electricity can cause the diodes in the alternator to fail. This is what keeps the auto electricians in business.

Very good to know! Are you familiar with something called zapstopper? My engin is fitted with one- is that supposed to prevent damage to the alternator and can you rely on one?

It would be nice if you could remove the key once the engine has started.......

Do you take the key out of the ignition after you have started your car?

If you don't want a key switch you should have ordered the push button panel. These do cost a little more than the standard panels.

I do not know. I suggest that this question is best asked of the zapstop manufacturer.
