Fuel Lift Pump


I have just received delivery of my new Beta 43, to be installed in my Tayana 37 sailboat. The fuel tank is located near the bow, about 25 ft. away from the engine, at about the same level. The fuel will be pulled through a Racor primary filter (2 or 10 micron) before reaching the engine.  Is the lift pump on the engine adequate for this, or should I install an electric pump? If an electric pump, should it assist or replace the existing pump? If assist, what type is recommended? If replace, what type is recommended? Does Beta supply the pump(s)? If the existing pump is bypassed, can the existing lift pump be left in place or should it be removed?

Hello and welcome to the forum,

The mechanical lift pump on the engine is not up to sucking the fuel from 25' away. I suggest that you fit a low pressure electric pump as close to the tank as possible and wire it to a switched 12V supply so that it is only on when the ignition is on. These pumps push fuel much better than they suck fuel. We do keep one in stock and I suggest that you leave the mechanical lift pump in line.

I recommend that you use the Racor 10 or 30 micron element as a primary.

Thanks for the reply.  I (and the boat/engine) am currently in Mazatlán, Mexico. It would be much more cost effective to obtain a low pressure fuel pump locally. Do you have a recommendation for the pump? I will be installing the CW panel. Where would be a good place on the harness to power the pump? Thanks again.

A recommended pump would the Facet pump sold by NAPA autoparts. NAPA part number 610-1052. Facet part number 40104

This 12 volt pump pushes 1.5 - 4 PSI.

The panel wiring will not provide enough amperage to continuously operate the pump. You will need to add a relay to the ignition circut that will activate the pump when the panel is turned on. 

There is a small brown "ignition" wire that is normally tied back and unused behind the alternator. This small brown wire is only hot when the panel is activated. This is the preferred wire to activate a small "5 pin automotive relay" switch that can then provide power to the pump directly from the B+ power post on the engine.

Napa can also provide a simple and common "5 pin automotive relay" in 30- 40 amp capacity for this purpose. The wiring diagram for the relay circuit can be found in the schematics near the back of the Beta 43 owners manual.
