Im in my second season with my Beta 38, WOC K35616. All is generally well, but I have definitely experienced significant battery bank degradation since the Beta was installed and I do not believe that my very conservative use has changed or that that the batteries have naturally worn out. Having checked most things, I believe that the charging voltage from the standard alternator/regulator is too low to ever fully charge the batteries. I understand that this stock regulator is not a smart one, but is there any way for me to change the set point?
Weve just been out on a two-week cruise, which included a few long motoring days that should have fully or nearly fully charged the batteries. Watching my meter, I see the charge current drop off and the voltage increase as expected after the engines runs a bit. But once the charge rate is very low, a tenth or two of an amp, the voltage never gets above about 13.85 volts. Though OK for a float charge, my Odyssey AGMs really want a cyclic charge in the 14.4-14.8 volt range, so they are likely never being fully restored.
The best answer is probably a Balmar or other smart regulator. In the interim, is there anything g Ican do to make the standard regulator installed run at a higher voltage? My solar panel and controller will take care of the long-term float charging, but I need the alternator to do the bulk cyclic charging.
The standard internal regulator is not adjustable. It should be providing 14.4 to 14.5 V.
It is a simple matter to replace the regulator if it is faulty and these are not expensive.
It is also possible to fit a brush box and then an external adjustable regulator if wanted.
I have the brush box so am about to switch to an external regulator. Is the alternator that came on my engine (optional 100A, I believe) a P-type, to work easily with a Balmar MC-614 smart regulator?
The 100 amp brush box provides two wires from the alternator field. One wire is yellow and one wire is black. The black wire connects to the alternator case ground. The Yellow wire is connected to the filed output terminal (Pin # 4) on the Balmar 614 regulator. If you follow the instructions in the Balmar 614 manual you will find the installation very straight forward.

I have the brush box and will shortly install that and the Balmar 614 regulator. Is there any instruction document for removing the in-built regulator and installing the brush box?
